The United States Marine Corps are celebrating their 250th birthday and they brought the festivities to Lynn last Sunday, August 24th. Featuring performances by the Quantico Marine Band, Silent Drill Platoon and the Lynn English Junior ROTC. Last Saturday, August 23rd, Ward 6 Councilor Fred Hogan hosted the 1st Annual Kite Day at Harbor Park. This was also the first event to take place at the newly opened park. The community donated over 400 kites to the cause and they could be seen flying all across the sky. The League of Women’s Voters of MA and 11 partner organizations held a celebration for Women’s History Month at the Lynn Museum & Arts Center on March 19. At the Lynn Museum several speakers, including Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, spoke about the importance of these kind of events, women in the arts, and more. Footage provided by Mukala Kabongo. Edited by Dani Vittori. For the 3rd year Joel Aguero & Stop The Violence: LYNN teamed up for a football clinic at Manning Field. On July 6th dozens of youth of all ages learned the basics of football and went through training.

Stop the Violence held their first annual dodgeball tournament to bring all the wards in the city together. LCTV was on scene to witness the friendly competition which drew a large crowd.

On October 9th the Lynn fire Department hosted an open house at their headquarters, 725 Western Avenue. As part of Fire Prevention Week the men and women of the LFD invited the community down to learn about fire safety and prevention, activities for kids, and more.

KIPP Academy’s recent request to expand is the subject on this special edition of the Lynn Lowdown. Superintendent of Lynn Public Schools Dr. Evonne Alvarez & Executive Director of KIPP academy - Lynn Nikki Barnes joined LCTV News Director Dani Vittori to discuss KIPP’s application to the state for expansion, address funding issues, benefits for students either way, and more. Each side brought up the pros and cons of this move, using data and research. Both sides of the issue were given approx. 12 minutes to state their cases, and a coin flip determined that LPS would present first.

North Shore Juneteenth Association held the opening reception for their annual Local Black Excellence Display in the foyer of Lynn City Hall. The evening saw a performance of The Black National Anthem sung by Janey David, speeches from local civic and community leaders, citations to those honored, and more.
